- August 13, 2020Red Hot Poker Sowing Instructions
Planting Depth:1/4”
Seed Spacing:2”-3”
Plant Spacing:18”-24”
Days to Germination:10-20 days
Germination Temperature:70°-75°F
Kniphofia uvaria. A.K.A. Tritoma or Torch Lilies, Red Hot Pokers love sun and heat, and are perfect for that baking area beyond the reach of your water hose. Moisten seeds and then store them, wrapped in plastic, in a cold place for 4 weeks before sowing them indoors, 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date. Keep the seeds moist until germination. Harden off the seedlings by slowly introducing them to the outdoors over the span of a week, and then transplant them after the last frost date to 12” apart in full sun and well-draining soil. If the hummingbird-beloved flowers are allowed to mature, the songbirds will make a meal of the seeds, though the seeds that elude them may sprout where they fall next spring. The tough, grassy foliage is evergreen but may get a bit battered in winter. Remove tattered leaves in spring.

This is one of my favorite little surprise salads to serve with Mixed Grill Sate or other hot-spicy main courses. It is easy to prepare and is delicious, with a surprising taste, texture and haute cuisine spa attitude.

- August 13, 2020Rhubarb Sowing Instructions
Planting Depth:1/2”
Row Spacing:36”-48”
Plant Spacing:12”-24”
Days to Germination:6-18 days
Germination Temperature:70°F
Encased in paper-like shells, Rhubarb seeds should be soaked for 24 hours before planting. Start indoors as transplants 5 weeks before the last frost date. Sow 3 seeds 1⁄2" deep in 4" pots. Cover with soil, tamp down and provide 70°F temperatures, strong light, good air circulation and uniformly moist soil until seedlings emerge. After 2 weeks, thin each pot to the strongest plant. After all danger of frost has passed, harden plants off by gradually acclimating them to the outdoors over 7 to 10 days. Amend the soil as necessary with organic fertilizer, compost and/or well-rotted manure. Transplant 12" apart in rich, well-draining soil and full to partial sunlight. Water and feed regularly. Mulch. To harvest, pull the shiny, green to rosy-red, 18" stalks out of the soil (rather than cutting them) and discard their poisonous leaves.

There are few moments more rewarding than when you come back into the house after planting plump flower bulbs on a brisk, sunny fall afternoon. And there are few lunches more heartily enjoyed on such a day than a steaming bowl of Rich Creamy Tomato Soup with cheddar and fontina grilled cheese sandwiches. For a spiced up version, lightly sprinkle ground cloves into the soup (like Sharon's grandmother) and spread a thin layer of fig and ginger jam on to artisan peasant bread before grilling the compound cheese sandwiches. You'll be all set to get back outside and finish planting bulbs in anticipation of a glorious spring garden!

There are few matches made in heaven better than garlic and ginger root. And orange. After years of testing and tweaking, this recipe is our favorite go-to sauce for oven roasted chicken thighs. And salmon steaks. And..... -

There are elegant recipes for classic French Pommes Anna but I prefer to make these simple, individual stacks of pressed potato layers. It’s so nice to have another easy potato recipe that can be made the day ahead. By roasting them in individual ramekins first, and then placed directly on to a baking tray, excess butter can ooze out unlike when baked in one large dish.

One of our favorite Maine destinations is the Castine Inn, nestled in the historic seaside village of Castine. In praise of Chef Tom Gutow's food, the Boston Globe said it "is as fine as you would find along the French countryside." For information call (207) 326-4365 or visit www.castineinn.com.

Looking for a fun snack for a Halloween party? Reserve the Pumpkin seeds from all of the Pumpkins carved for jack-o’-lanterns or cut up and roasted for Pumpkin purée. Make crunchy, sweet Roasted Spiced Pumpkin Seeds. Referred to as "pepitas", they are good all by themselves as a seasonal snack or strewn atop fall salads and even apple-pear crisps. Make sure to remove the outer husks from the interior green seed as it is the seed that is so good to eat, not the husk.
