Red Glacier Iceberg Lettuce

50-70 days. Both gorgeous and delicious, Red Glacier has dazzling deep red-tinged leaves and a brilliant celadon-green heart. It yields tight full heads that hold well in the garden and color up nicely in the heat of summer. It has big crunch and a lovely, mild Lettuce flavor. Its ruby jewel tones jazz up the classic wedge salad: cut a quarter wedge of Red Glacier and drizzle with an ample portion of your favorite blue cheese dressing spiced with a kick of hot sauce. Sprinkle with crumbled bacon, thinly sliced scallions, red Onions and black olives and freshly cracked black pepper. Crunchingly refreshing. (OP)

A far cry from its wild, weedy ancestors, Lettuce now appears in all shapes, textures, flavors and sizes, bringing healthy crunch to modern kitchens. The varieties we offer are beautiful, reliable and usually not available in stores. To enjoy its ephemeral sweetness and texture, make sure Lettuce grows quickly: water it frequently and fertilize weekly with fish emulsion or manure tea. Direct-seed from the spring through the late summer. For baby greens, sow thickly and harvest with scissors or raise transplants, plugging seedlings into empty spaces in your garden as they become available.

Average seed life: 3 years.
