Nigella orientalis. This otherworldly Nigella’s base of five citron-yellow petals is topped with a smaller layer of burgundy-banded petals, then a ruff of short chartreuse anthers and a fountain of green stigmas. The seed heads that follow are a fluted circle of reflexed, spiked wings! Height: 18" to 24".

  • Nigella damascena. Also called Love-in-a-Mist, prolific Nigella is an easy-to-grow heirloom with delicate, wispy, star-shaped flowers, narrow, spindly foliage and dramatic seed pods. A beguiling plant for garden display, it widely revered in dried arrangements.
