Italico Red Dandelion Greens

35-55 days. This striking variety has deep pink-red stems and midribs. It’s gorgeous as a young leaf in salads, and as a mature leaf, it keeps its color when cooked! It has great cold tolerance. (OP.)

One packet of about 300 seeds

Not at all a Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) but a member of the ancient Chicory family (Cichorium intybus), these pleasantly bitter leaves are much loved by Italians in cold and warm salads, soups, stews, and braised vegetable sides. The plants stand erect, up to 12" tall and have thick rosettes of leaves resembling those of common Dandelions. Preferring cool temperatures, Catalogna should be sowed in early spring and/or in the fall.

Average seed life: 3 years.
