Fiesta del Sol Mexican Sunflower

New! Fiesta del Sol Mexican Sunflower has the same great vivid orange-red flowers as our ever-popular Goldfinger, but it's shorter at just two to three feet tall. Like Goldfinger, it loves the heat and thrives through periods of scant rainfall, and attracts blissful bees and butterflies as well as other beneficial pollinators. Height: 24" to 36".

    • Tithonia rotundifolia. This drought-tolerant, heat-loving wonder is a large, almost shrub-like plant that produces abundant flowers. It is best started directly in the garden, although it may also be started indoors 6 to 8 weeks prior to setting out after all threat of frost has passed in spring. Staking may be required. A fabulous display annual, it is also a good cutting flower. Mexican Sunflower's hollow stems should be flame-seared before being added to extravagant summer bouquets to prevent wilting. Annual.       Tithonia rotundifolia. Mexican Sunflower can be direct-sown into the garden or started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting out after the threat of frost has passed. Prepare bed in full sunlight with rich, well-draining soil. Sow seeds in good seedstarting medium at 70°F with even moisture, strong light and good ventilation. For consistent moisture during germination, cover flats or pots with plastic wrap until seedlings emerge: then discard plastic. Harden off seedlings by gradually acclimating them to outside conditions for 1 to 2 weeks before transplanting out. Thin or transplant the seedlings 24" apart. Drought-tolerant, this heat-lover requires good drainage and dislikes excessive watering. This imperious scarlet-orange beauty may need staking. A terrific cut flower, cut ends must be flame-seared to prevent wilting. Summer flowering. Height: 36" to 48".
