Catmint Nepeta

Catmint has delicate, pale cornflower-blue flowers above opulent mounds of pale green foliage with a spicy-sweet scent that is released when you run your hands through them. Aromatic Catmint is absolutely splendid in lush ornamental garden borders through which taller summer flowers, like Lilies, can bloom. To encourage a second wave of blooms, cut the stalks back after the first wave of flowers has faded. It’s hard for us to imagine our summer garden without it. HZ: 3-10.

  • Information
  • Nepeta x faassenii. Technically an herb, Catmint Nepeta is easy to grow: it thrives in full to partial sunlight and in almost any type of soil. Direct-sow the tiny seeds in well-draining soil after the last spring frost date. It may also be started indoors 6 to 8 weeks prior to transplanting outside after the last possible frost date. Keep your eye on your cats so that they don't trample and crush the young seedlings. Once the plants are established, marauding cats are less capable of destruction. Catmint may bloom the first year if started early enough in the spring. Bee friendly. Deer resistant. Perennial. Hardiness zones: 3-10. Summer flowering. Height: 12" to 24".

Average seed life: 2 to 3 years.
