Purple Knight Alternanthera will become your new best friend. Easy to start indoors about two months before your last spring frost date, Purple Knight will come to your rescue with abundant, shiny, deep merlot-purple foliage that can grow up to 20" tall. It’s not a monotone color either: new foliage growth announces itself in green with a merlot tint and veins. Purple Knight is a terrific companion to Coleus, Ferns, Heuchera and Nasturtiums for natural foliage-scapes. It’s also a terrific filler in containers. Annual.

    • Alternanthera dentata. Prized for its mounding foliage, Alternanthera needs no flower to be the star. It is a terrific cover crop and magnificent in lush, cascading pots on old stonewalls or in hanging baskets. It is best to start it indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last spring frost date and then transplant outside. Annual. Summer leafing. Height: 16" to 20".

      Alternanthera dentata. Start transplants indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date. Sow seeds on top of sterile starter mix, leaving the seeds uncovered but pressed firmly onto the soil surface, as light is needed for germination. Pamper with 65°-75°F temperatures, good air circulation, strong light and even moisture. Do not allow the seedlings to wilt or dry out. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into larger, deeper pots for full root system development. After all danger of frost has passed, harden them off by gradually acclimating them to the outdoors over 7 to 10 days. Transplant out 12" apart in rich, moist, well-draining soil and full to partial sunlight. Prized for its mounding, shiny, deep purple foliage, Alternanthera is perfect in lush, combination containers. Summer leafing. Height: 16" to 20".
