Big Quaking Grass
Briza maxima. This little Grass is a charmer. The delicate stems support dancing, weeping wands of little iridescent green pointed rattlesnake tails, occasionally with pink shoulders. They shimmy in the slightest breeze and reflect sunlight like raindrops, and are wonderful in bouquets. The seed heads can be allowed to dry on the plant or cut while green and either added to fresh bouquets or hung to dry indoors, where they dry to a light buff beige. Direct-sow seeds in small clusters either in late summer or spring after the last spring frost date. Press the seeds into the soil and only lightly cover them. When happy, this grass will self-sow, but seedlings are easy to pull when they pop up in inconvenient spots. Annual. Summer blooming. Height: 20". Average seed life: 2 to 3 years.
