Collarette Dahlias feature an outer, 3" to 4" wide ring of flat petals topped by a charming ring of shorter, ruffled petals, often in a contrasting color. The finishing touch is a yellow button in the middle. So cute! HZ: 8-10. Treat as an annual or dig up roots.

    • Dahlia variabilis. Cottage garden heirlooms originating from Mexico, these special Dahlias are easy to grow from seed. They work well as a border plant, but even more importantly, they are great cutting flowers. Dahlias are best started indoors 4 to 6 weeks prior to the last spring frost date. Dahlias are tender perennials, so their tubers must be dug and stored in dry peat moss after a fall frost has killed the stems and leaves. Bee friendly. Deer resistant. Tender perennial. Hardiness zones: 8-10, can be grown as an annual. Summer flowering. Height: 30" to 39".

      Dahlia variabilis. Dahlias are best started indoors 4 to 6 weeks before transplanting outside after all danger of frost has passed. Sow seeds in good seed-starting medium at 70°F with even moisture, strong light and good ventilation. Prepare bed in full to partial sunlight with rich, well-draining soil. Harden off the seedlings by gradually acclimating them to outside conditions for 1 to 2 weeks prior to transplanting outside. Dahlias are moisture-loving plants. Mulch to conserve moisture, water consistently and fertilize as necessary. When the first frost kills the stems and leaves, dig up the tubers and store them in slightly dampened peat moss at 45° to 55°F over the winter. Good cutting flowers, The Collarette Mixture includes white, red, scarlet and yellow Dahlias. Summer flowering. Height: 30" to 39".
