Catnip

Nepeta cataria. This ancient herb has been used for centuries by humans in teas, potions and tinctures galore. Tea made from this perennial herb is said to be mildly relaxing and its leaves are sometimes dried for use in sachets. Catnip contains chemicals which act as an aphrodisiac in most cats - even lions. Growing it presents a challenge: transplants will be rolled upon, snorted and chewed and stand little chance of growing to a pretty 2' or taller plant with gray-green, slightly fuzzy leaves. Instead, sow the tiny seeds in well-draining soil in sun where they are to grow, marking the area. Oddly, cats behave indifferently toward Catnip which appears magically out of the ground. Bee friendly. Perennial. Hardiness zones: 3-9. Height: 24". (OP.)

Average seed life: 1 year.

One packet of about 300 seeds
