  • Information
  • Contrary to instinct, Cactus and succulent seeds need moist conditions to germinate. Start seeds in a small flat filled 3/4 full with moist, well-draining seed-starting soil that has been mixed with half as much sand. Space the seeds well apart and press them into the surface of the soil. Barely cover them with a layer of moist sand. Cover the flat with plastic wrap or place it in a sealed plastic bag and place it in a warm (70°F at the very least--a seedling heat mat is helpful), bright spot out of direct sunlight. The flat should not need watering as long as it is in plastic. Mist only if the surface of the soil looks dry. Seeds may take several weeks to germinate--patience is key! Top growth forms before roots, so allow ample time for the cacti to size up, gradually removing plastic wrap to lower humidity, before carefully transplanting to individual pots. Summer flowering. Height: varies.

Average seed life: 2 to 3 years.
