The Red Hot Poker Mixture

Red Hot Poker, A.K.A. Tritoma or Torch Lily, loves sun and heat, and is perfect for that baking area beyond the reach of your water hose. Tall spikes topped with variable flowers that typically go from red or orange on top to yellow on the bottom, it makes an exciting pop of hot color that snags the eye from near and far. If the hummingbird-beloved flowers are allowed to mature, the songbirds will swarm, making a meal of the seeds, though those that elude them may sprout where they fall next spring. The tough, grassy foliage, which can grow up the 3' wide, is evergreen, but may get a bit battered in winter. Remove tattered leaves in spring.
