False Indigo

Baptisia australis. A bit shy and slow, this handsome ornamental from the Pea family will probably not bloom until the second spring, but it is SO worth it. Once established, it grows into thick, full clumps that thrive until fall's first killing frost. Clusters may be divided in the early spring and replanted. Once the flowers have died back, Baptistia is fairly drought tolerant. Deer resistant. Perennial. Hardiness zones: 3-9. Early summer flowering. Height: 36" to 48".

Average seed life: 1 year.

Wild Blue False Indigo

Originally used by the colonists as indigo dye, (hence its nom de plume, False Indigo), Wild Blue has 12"-long, deep indigo-blue flower spikes and absolutely wonderful blue-green foliage that forms round, bushy clumps reaching 36" tall. It is an invaluable addition to perennial gardens. Start Baptisia indoors two weeks before the last frost date. Prior to planting, carefully nick the hard seed coat and/or soak the seeds overnight in lukewarm water to assist germination. HZ: 3-9.
