Daikon Radishes

Daikon, Japanese for radish, tends to grow larger and have a slightly hotter taste than their European-bred siblings. Daikon prefers cool weather to grow and is best seeded in early fall. As these radishes grow, hill up the soil around them and keep the soil evenly (but not overly) moist and well-seeded.

Average seed life: 3 years

#3850 Shrinmei Round Red Core Daikon Radishes: 50-60 days
This ball-shaped Chinese radish is quite unique. Its name translates to “beauty heart”: it is a white radish with green shoulders and a red core which radiates outward through its 4” diameter. (OP.)

#3860 New Crown Daikon Radishes: 50-55 days
From our favorite Japanese breeder comes this deluxe daikon radish. New Crown grows 12” to 14” long and about 2” wide. This brand new hybrid is very popular in Japan at the moment and features snow-white skin and pale green shoulders. The flesh has a nice mild heat. Be sure to prepare soil by digging deeply at least one foot down. (F1.)
