Oakleaf Lettuce

Featured Recipes:

A far cry from its wild, weedy ancestors, lettuce now appears in all shapes, textures, flavors and sizes, bringing healthy crunch to modern kitchens. The varieties we offer are beautiful, reliable and usually not available in stores. To enjoy its ephemeral sweetness and texture, make sure lettuce grows quickly: water it frequently and fertilize weekly with fish emulsion or manure tea. Direct-seed from the spring through the late summer. For baby greens, sow thickly and harvest with scissors or raise transplants, plugging seedlings into empty spaces in your garden as they become available.

Average seed life: 3 years

To broaden the range of texture and flavor in your garden and salads, don’t forget to plant some of these specialty Salad Greens:

Arugula, Asian Greens, Chervil, Claytonia, Cress, Dandelion Greens, Escarole, Frisee, Giant Red Mustard, Komatsuna, Lettuce, Mache, Mibuna, Minutina, Mizuna, Orach, Radicchio, Salad Blends, Sorrel, Spinach, Swiss Chard, and Tatsoi.

#2745 Emerald Oakleaf Lettuce: 45-60 days

#2747 Bronze Beauty Oakleaf Lettuce: 40-50 days
New! To complete our Oakleaf line-up, we’ve added the Bronze Arrowhead, a Californian heirloom circa 1947. Holding well in the garden without bolting, hardy and widely adaptable, this All-American Bronze Medalist has been hailed as the finest, most colorful and delicious leaf lettuce for home gardeners. It has massive, dark green leaves with bronzed pinot-noir sculpted leaf edges, a great texture and most sweet flavor. (OP.)

Packet of 700 Seeds / $3.35

#2755 Danyelle Red Oakleaf Lettuce: 50 days
Dark wine-red, Danyelle has deeply lobed and frilled leaves and a full, yet compact, open rosette head. Its sweet and mild taste is wonderful when cut as a baby leaf or when fully grown. Bolt-resistant, it performs extremely well in the high heat of summer. Our taste favorite in trials, Danyelle is popularly featured in farmers’ markets since it may be harvested continuously over an extended period. (OP.)
