Datura

|
Datura metel. AKA the Devil’s Trumpet, Horn of Plenty, Jimson Weed or the Thorn Apple, Datura is a tender perennial native to China, India and Southeast Asia. It is a large, vigorous plant with a woody stalk, vibrant blue-green foliage and erect, trumpet-shaped flowers that look like outstretched champagne flutes, followed by prickly egg-shaped seed pods. Start it as a transplant indoors 10 to 12 weeks before setting out at least 2 weeks after the last frost date. To assist germination, soak the seeds for 24 hours in lukewarm water. Take care, it is poisonous, so throw felled foliage and spent flowers away; do not add them to your compost pile. Tender perennial. Summer flowering. Height: 24” to 30”.
