Until recent history, every household depended upon herbs: for food, medicine, surgery, in soap-making, to dye cloth and in magic potions! Herbs are best when absolutely fresh and intensely aromatic and growing your own is easy. When herbs bloom, their flowers attract beneficial insects, butterflies and hummingbirds, contributing to a healthy garden and environment. Many are native to rocky or sandy, semi-arid areas like Greece and Africa, so warmth, good drainage and soil with only moderate organic matter suits them. All herbs dislike chemical fertilizer. Instead, and only occasionally, use fish or kelp emulsion or a bit of manure tea.
